{"id":332,"date":"2018-08-31T23:53:33","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T23:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/birdsinfocus.com\/blog\/?p=332"},"modified":"2018-11-03T09:18:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-03T09:18:45","slug":"2018-taxonomy-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/birdsinfocus.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/31\/2018-taxonomy-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Taxonomy Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n\nSeveral years ago, we at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/birdsinfocus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BirdsInFocus.com<\/a>\u00a0made an internal commitment to synchronize our website&#8217;s taxonomy with the annually updated\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/clementschecklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eBird\/Clements Checklist<\/a>.\u00a0This has allowed us to stay as current as possible, for every bird species in the world, on the nomenclature now used by a rapidly growing majority of the world&#8217;s birders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s always a labor-intensive process, and ironic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bird_fancier%27s_lung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health issues<\/a> prevented me from completing the 2017 updates until this year, but I&#8217;m very pleased to announce that we&#8217;re now back on schedule. We incorporated all of the 2017 <em>and<\/em> 2018 taxonomic revisions just one week after eBird released its 2018 updates, making BirdsInFocus once again one of the most up-to-date bird photography websites in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now have nearly 12,000 high-quality photos online representing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsinfocus.com\/species_list.php?region=world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,153 species of birds<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsinfocus.com\/geographic.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 countries<\/a>\u00a0on six continents, several islands, and at sea. With the latest taxonomic updates, we&#8217;ve\u00a0added two new orders and six new families:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>New in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsinfocus.com\/show.php?family=Phaenicophilidae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phaenicophilidae<\/a> (Hispaniolan Tanagers)<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsinfocus.com\/show.php?family=Nesospingidae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nesospingidae<\/a>\u00a0(Puerto Rican Tanager)<br\/><\/li><li><a
